JE - Southern Railway 500 HP 0-6-0 Shunter (Complete Kit)
This locomotive was designed and mostly completed at Ashford works before nationalisation but did not enter service until 1950 under British Railways. Intended to be suitable both for heaving shunting and main line running with a top speed of 43mph, it turned out to be not entirely suited to either and was eventually withdrawn in 1959.
The power unit was Paxman-Ricardo V12 driving through a Powerflow transmission to the jackshaft under the cab. As well as being easily the most powerful diesel shunter on British Railways. The connecting rod from the jackshaft lead on to the center crankpin, which it started with the trailing portion of the coupling rods, but the leading coupling rod was attached directly to the conecting rod rather than the crankpin.
This arrangement, common in high powered steam locos in the USA was intended to reduce the stresses on the driving crankpins.
Other notable features were the Boxpok wheels and side mounted radiators with a roof fan. Curiously though no electric lights or train brakes were fitted.
11001was turned out in plain black livery and carried the early BR crest all its life. The running number was also carried on the leading buffer beam. It spent most of its working life at Norwood Junction on shunting duties with some trip freight workings, but it did travel quite widely. During the early 1950's 11001 has two spells working from Stourton Junction in Leeds and it was photographed at Derby in Swindon.
This kit is etched in nickel silver and includes overlays to produce the Box Pok wheels.
