Great Central in the Midlands
The photographic selection within this
book, concentrates around the Midlands for which the former
Great Central Railway's route fought for traffic alongside so many other
pre-grouping lines, ultimately to lose out as a direct result of Dr.
Beeching in September 1966. We can enjoy some of the work from cameraman
Mike Mitchell, as we follow the line from Staveley Central through the
East Midland cities of Nottingham and Leicester to Brackley Central in
Northamptonshire, the southernmost station on the Great Central main
line in the Midlands area. There was a wide variety of motive power used
over the Great Central due to it being used as a cross-country route
and the fact that under British Railways ownership it was controlled by
both the Eastern and Midland Regions, as well as joint ownership of
Nottingham Victoria with the Great Northern Railway in pre-grouping
days.
